Tourette syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by repetitive, involuntary movements and vocalizations called tics. Tics may include eye blinking, facial grimacing, shoulder shrugging, throat clearing, or grunting. The onset of Tourette syndrome usually occurs in childhood and may improve or worsen over time. The exact cause of Tourette syndrome is unknown, but it is believed to involve genetic and environmental factors. Tourette syndrome may be treated with medications, such as haloperidol, or behavioral therapies, such as habit reversal training.
