Why Vortioxetine is more expensive than many other antidepressants?

Vortioxetine is more expensive than many other antidepressants for several reasons:

  1. Patent protection: Vortioxetine is a relatively new medication, approved by the FDA in 2013. The manufacturer still holds the patent for the drug, which grants them exclusive rights to produce and sell it. This lack of competition allows the company to set higher prices.
  2. Research and development costs: Developing new medications is a costly and time-consuming process. Pharmaceutical companies invest significant resources into researching, testing, and gaining approval for new drugs. To recoup these costs and fund further research, companies often set higher prices for newer medications like vortioxetine.
  3. Marketing expenses: Vortioxetine is marketed under the brand name Trintellix, and the manufacturer invests in advertising and promotion to increase awareness and demand for the drug. These marketing expenses can also contribute to the higher cost of the medication.
  4. Unique mechanism of action: Vortioxetine has a distinct mechanism of action compared to other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), as it also modulates various serotonin receptors. This unique property may contribute to the drug’s effectiveness for some individuals and allow the company to charge a premium price.
  5. Limited availability of generics: Once the patent for a brand name drug expires, other manufacturers can produce and sell generic versions, which are typically less expensive. However, as of my knowledge cutoff date in September 2021, there were no generic versions of vortioxetine available in the market. This lack of generic alternatives can contribute to the higher cost of the brand name medication.

It’s important to note that medication prices can vary depending on factors such as insurance coverage, pharmacy location, and available discounts. If you’re concerned about the cost of vortioxetine, it’s essential to discuss your options with your healthcare provider and explore potential financial assistance programs, discount cards, or alternative medications that may be more affordable.

There are various forms of drugs available, such as tablets or liquids, and each may have a separate patient information leaflet (PIL) for different doses. It is important to refer to the PIL for the specific form and dose of the drug that you have been prescribed.
