Agitation is a state of restlessness or extreme emotional arousal that can manifest as physical or verbal aggression, pacing, or fidgeting. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including stress, anxiety, medication side effects, and medical conditions such as dementia or Parkinson’s disease. Agitation can lead to difficulty communicating and may put the individual and others at risk of harm. Treatment for agitation depends on the underlying cause and may involve medication, therapy, or other interventions to reduce stress and promote relaxation.
