neuroleptic malignant syndrome

« Back to Glossary Index

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a rare but potentially life-threatening reaction to certain medications used to treat mental health conditions. It is characterized by fever, muscle rigidity, and altered mental status and requires immediate medical attention. NMS can occur with the use of antipsychotic medications, such as zotepine, and other dopamine-blocking drugs. It is important to discuss any concerns or symptoms with a healthcare provider if you are taking these medications.
